Viv-viD Art is a collaboration between the painter Vivian Wenhuey Chen and David Hennage. We are combing Vivian's paintings and David's sculptures in installation settings. Seen here are Duet I - VI. Each installation is approximately H4' W3' D3'.
We use form and color to translate the complexities of mystical Asian philosophy and movement art into Viv-viDArt. In describing her paintings Vivian states, “My current work is infused with my Asian heritage: its religions, its cultures and its painting styles. I have taken scriptures from Buddhism and Daoism and repeated those characters in Chinese brush writing styles, adding layers upon layers in different colors, until I reach a meditative state and the paintings finally manifest. My paintings are become ‘mindless,’ reflecting the Eastern philosophy that mindlessness is full.” David explains, “I combine my practice of Tai Chi and Qigong with my knowledge of math and physics to create elegant abstract sculptures. The creation process includes many maquettes and often computer-aided design and manufacturing (CNC). Various materials are used in the sculptures Including steel, bronze and wood. Some of the steel sculptures are powder coated and some have patinas. We pair the paintings and the sculptures in “duets” to take the viewer into a new reality and appreciation of Asian culture.Just as Tai Chi is often performed with several people as a dance, the sculptures and the paintings compliment each other creating a single artwork that is greater than the sum of the parts.”
